Frequently asked questions
From fitness level to fundraising targets, we have answers to all the frequently asked questions for Ride the Night.
The Ride
How fit do I need to be?
If you can comfortably cycle around 20km, you’re already off to a great start. Our training plan will help you build up to either 50km or 100km. There are many first-time participants, so you’ll be in very good company from training, right through to the finish line.
What bike can I ride?
Any safe, roadworthy bike is fine. Both the 50km and 100km routes are fully on-road, so we recommend a road or hybrid bike. You must bring your own bike and wear a cycling helmet. If you’re using a mountain bike, please fit road tyres.
Electric bikes and hand bikes are welcome, but please tell us in advance if you’re using a hand bike. We advise getting your bike serviced before the challenge. Event mechanics may not be able to fix issues specific to electric or hand bikes.
Your bike must have front and rear lights, and you should bring spare batteries. Please also carry a spare inner tube suitable for your bike. Ride Angels will be out on the route all night to help with any problems.
What do I need to know about riding at night?
All participants will be handed a pink Hi Vis which must be worn throughout the ride. Bike lights and cycle helmets are also compulsory. Roads are not closed for the event, so expect normal traffic alongside you. The route is generally well-lit and there is clear directional signage throughout. There will also be marshals sat at important junctions to guide you as well as our fabulous Ride Angels out on the route to support you.
Is bike hire available?
If you don’t have a bike for the event, or you're struggling with transporting it to Windsor, you can book and hire a bike in advance to collect at the event village on the afternoon of the event.
Is the event accessible?
We endeavour to make all aspects of the event village and route as accessible as possible.
Please note that Ride The Night is an unassisted road event through London, and participants ride on open roads alongside other road users.
Hand bikes have taken part in the event most years and are very welcome. If you are planning to take part with a hand bike, please ensure it is fully serviced prior to the challenge.
If you are completing the 50km route and will require repatriation back to the event village, please be aware that there are a limited number of spaces available for hand bikes on the return buses. We ask that you let us know in advance so we can plan accordingly.
If you have any questions about accessibility, please get in touch, we’re always happy to help.
The Route
What is the route?
Route information will be uploaded here soon.
Where is the 50km finish and can I return to the event village?
The 50km finish will be at the Imperial War Museum, Lambeth Rd, London.
You can purchase a ticket for £20 to take you and your bike back to the event village at the start.
The coaches do not have set departure times, once each coach is full it will depart back to the racecourse.
Returning to the venue isn’t mandatory, you can also head home from the 50km finish.
Will there be signage on the route?
The route follows open, well-lit tarmac roads with clear directional signage throughout and marshals at key junctions. Please slow down and follow their guidance. You’re responsible for navigating safely and must always follow the Highway Code. Roads are not closed for the event, so expect normal traffic alongside you.
How long does it take?
Some riders complete their ride in a few hours, others take longer. There’s no time pressure, and we support every rider regardless of pace. We do recommend keeping rest stops fairly short though, as it can sometimes be harder to get going again if you stop for too long!
Are there feed stations/rest stops along the way?
There are three feed stations on the 100km route and one on the 50km route, spaced roughly every 25km and clearly signed. Each offers free water, food and toilets. You’re welcome to stop, but it isn’t mandatory. To help minimise queues, please follow instructions and the flow of riders. If you do stop, try to keep it brief - the longer you pause, the harder it can be to get going again!
Registration
What’s included in my entry fee?

Is there an age limit?
This event is for women aged 18 or older. We welcome anyone under the age of 18 who is confident in taking part with a paying responsible adult. Please contact events@womenvcancer.co.uk to complete a consent form for them.

Yes! And do set up a team when you register to help motivate each other to reach a team fundraising target! Please do sign up to the same start wave so you can experience the ride together.
Can I change my distance or wave time?

Wave times do have limited spaces, so if a wave is already full we may not be able to move you into it. If you’d like to ride with a friend who’s registered in an earlier/fully-booked wave, you can both move to a later wave instead, as long as spaces are available. Email events@womenvcancer.co.uk for support.
Can I transfer my place to another person?
Absolutely! You can transfer your place to another person. Just try to let us know at least two weeks before the event. Email us at events@womenvcancer.co.uk and we’ll help you sort it out.
